Typical Duties of a Governess
A Governess is responsible for the education of the children in her care. A Governess duties may include but are not restricted to:
- School entrance exam preparation
- Exam support
- Daily homework supervision
- Accompany the children on the school run
- Ensure correct etiquette is adhered to at all times
- Take care of the educational needs of children
- Tailor an adapted curriculum to meet the children’s educational needs
- Provide activities that support your children’s social and cultural development
- Focus on the educational needs and intellectual development of the children
- Provide a completely flexible and personalised education
- Teach special skills such as languages, sports or musical instruments
- Educate children thoroughly in all areas
- Ensure the children are fully able to conduct themselves well and behave appropriately
- General table manners
- Ensure that formal table setting is understood
- Teach Conversational skills and How to greet people appropriately
- Instil confidence to children
- Give the children the required tools to communicate well and make an excellent impression
Salary Expectations for a Governess
A Governess is a highly qualified educator who focuses on the academic, social, and cultural development of children. Unlike a nanny, a Governess typically holds a teaching degree or specialized certifications and focuses on formal tutoring, etiquette, and language acquisition.
Full-Time Live-in Governess
Standard Schedule: 7am – 7pm, Monday to Friday
UK (Regional): From £1,000 – £1,500+ net per week
London: From £1,200 – £2,000+ net per week
Overseas: From £1,300 – £2,500+ net per week
Expertise Premium: Governesses with a PGCE, Master’s in Education, or fluency in multiple high-demand languages (e.g., French, Mandarin, or Russian) often command salaries at the top end of these ranges.
