A butler has professional training and formal experience in either private households or prestigious hotels. Butlers duties may include but are not restricted to:
- Receiving Household guests on behalf of the Principal/Family
- Running the household and personal errands for the Principal
- Managing suppliers
- Making travel arrangements for the Principal and Family or other Household guests
- Security maintenance
- Assisting with the preparation and serving of meals and drinks
- Setting the table for formal meals
- Creating and maintaining household budgets
- Wine cellar management
- Scheduling maintenance of estate property
Salary Expectations for a Butler
A modern Butler is a versatile professional who balances traditional service with high-level household management. Whether managing a single residence or overseeing a global portfolio of properties, their salary reflects their level of discretion, management expertise, and specialized skills (such as sommelier training or valet services).
Full-Time Live-in Butler
Standard Schedule: 7am – 7pm, Monday to Friday/Saturday
UK (National): From £1,000 – £1,600+ net per week
London: From £1,200 – £2,000+ net per week
Overseas: From £1,500 – £2,500+ net per week
Market Insight: For senior “Head Butlers” or “Estate Managers” in London and the Middle East, annual packages frequently exceed £100,000 – £150,000 gross, depending on the scale of the staff they manage.
